McCartney & Bynoe are 2018 BPMSI Champions

Devan McCartney is Bushy Park Motor Sports Inc’s (BPMSI) Champion Driver for 2018, with Kevin Bynoe claiming the Champion Rider crown. At the third and final round of the Club’s 2018 Championship season during the Williams Digicel International Race Meet at the St Philip facility on September 1/2, McCartney claimed a hat-trick of Group 1/Class 2 wins, while Bynoe clinched the Superstock Bike title by just one point.

Former bike racer McCartney(Zephirins Bakery/CA Autobody Repairs Honda CRX) had started 2017 on a high with a similar trio of class wins, but the season went rapidly downhill after that, so victory in this year’s title fight is just reward, particularly as it comes in BPMSI’s most popular and competitive class. With six class wins, two seconds and a fourth place to his credit, he amassed a total of 198 points, with newcomer Verdon Inniss (Rezult Auto Shop/C&C Trucking/Illusion Graphics Toyota Starlet) finishing second, not only in Gp1/C2, but also in the Champion Driver standings, with 132 points.

Third in class, and the winner of all three Gp1/C2 races in the July Night Races on the National Circuit was Ross Callender(CA Autobody Repairs/Percy King Auto Parts/Cheese AutoGlass Finish/Britos/Crane & Equipment/Indulge with Anna/Ullyetts Machine Shop Daihatsu Charmant), but he was forced to miss the final round when his engine blew on Qualifying Day.

Having finished second in Gp1/C1 for the past two seasons, Darren Lashley (Hi-Speed Performance Parts/CA Autobody Repairs/Sky Drive Rentals/Turk Lashley Motorsport Honda Integra) moved up to Gp2/C2 for 2018 in the car formerly campaigned by Windell Holmes, and with good results; the only driver to score in all three rounds, Lashley’s total of 117 gave him the class win, also third overall.

Junior Benskin (JB Pickling & Painting Services/Benskin Auto Electrical & Mechanical Repairs/Martindale Workshop Nissan NX Coupe) claimed the Gp2/C1 title, his total of 114points placing him fourth overall, ahead of Callender, while last year’s Champion Driver Andre Walcott (Williams Industries/M-Grafix/CA Autobody Repairs/SE Performance Suzuki Swift) finished sixth this year. He still won Gp1/C1, despite missing the July Night Races, after he ran out of time to repair his engine, which had failed at the previous weekend’s Barbados Association of Dragsters & Drifters Launch Control 3.

The Hilti Handicap Championship for Cars was limited to two rounds this year, Shawn Eversley (SE Performance/Structural Systems Suzuki Swift) winning in March and Tyrone Martindale (Precision Electricals/JB Pickling & Painting Services/Martindale Workshop Honda CRX) at the CMRC International. Eversley retired a few laps in to the September Handicap, which Martindale won, giving him a year-end total of 43 points and the title. Eversley came second in the standings with 25 points, ahead of Darren Lashley, who earned 21 from finishing third in March and seventh in September.

In common with the Handicap Championship, there were only two rounds of the Superstock Championship, as bike racing currently does not enjoy the same popularity as a couple of years ago. Bynoe (Suzuki GSX-R600) was the only rider to score points in both March and September, finishing second to Shirley Scantlebury (Ride Tech Rentals/El Palacio Apts/Imperial Motors/Percy King Auto Parts/ITech Consulting/Mikes Trucking & Recovery Suzuki GSX-R600) in the only race run at the season-opener.

At the CMRC meet, Bynoe finished second of the BPMSI runners in all three races to Terrance Ollivierre (Kermits Bar/Xhosa Barbados/Demario’s Cycle World Suzuki GSX-R600), who was returning to action after dislocating his shoulder in a tumble at Bushy Park in March. With reduced points awarded for the last race, as the class was under-subscribed, Ollivierre ended the day with 68 points, one shy of Bynoe’s total of 69.
