Battle for BKA title hots up after dramatic round six

Just 21 points now separate the top three in the Sectus Technologies Barbados Karting Association (BKA) Championship after Sunday’s (August 11) sixth round at Bushy Park Barbados. With a clean sweep of four wins in the Easykart 125cc class former Champion Calem Maloney now has 485 points to split cousins Zak and Jacob Mayers, who have led the standings since April; they have amassed 496 and 475.

The Mayers boys still lead the Easykart 100cc Juniors class, although Zak’s advantage over Jacob was cut again during a dramatic day’s racing; Jacob was the faster in Qualifying, when they were the only runners, with Aeden Bruce not entered and Oliver Judd withdrawing after practice. The Juniors races were merged with the 60cc Cadets.

There was intense competition, both cousins incurring penalties as they fought hard to start the second half of the season with strong results. While Jacob won the first race, he was penalised 10secs for causing a collision, although his winning margin was such that he retained the victory. Zak won the next two events on the road, but was placed second after penalties, including 10secs for causing a collision in race two, while Jacob won the day’s final outing by 9/100ths of a second after close combat throughout.

While 2022 Champion Driver Maloney brought his total of race wins this year to 18, he was pressed harder on Sunday than in previous rounds, with a brief return to karting for 2019 BKA Champion Adam Mallalieu, also renewing their rivalry from the Caribbean Junior Karting Academy Trophy (CJKAT). But it was regular podium finisher Aaron Blackett who was fastest in Qualifying, leading the early stages of the day’s opening race before finishing 1.3secs behind Maloney and the same margin ahead of Mallalieu, who claimed the fastest lap on his way from eighth on the grid.

In the reverse grid race two, 2018 BKA Champion Colin Bradshaw took the fight to Maloney, clocking the fastest lap and finishing second, with Mallalieu again completing the podium, although Raizer Stoute lost second place on the road to a 10secs bumper infringement penalty. In the day’s final two encounters, Maloney led Mallalieu home by 1.6secs, with Bradshaw third each time, claiming two more fastest laps.

Despite the penalty, Stoute’s results for the day promote him to sixth overall and third in the 125cc class with 347 points, behind Maloney (485pts) and Blackett (375pts).

Having qualified fastest, Jordyn Hinkson won all four Easykart 60cc Cadets races, chased hard each time by Jaydn Brathwaite; with third place in each race, Shamir Eversley still leads the class with 370 points and sits fifth in the overall standings.
