Barbados karting celebrates its Champions

Members of the Barbados Karting Association (BKA), their families, friends and volunteer marshals and officials gathered in the Open Air Suites at Bushy Park Barbados on Saturday, March 1 to celebrate the winners of the 2024 Sectus Technologies Championship. Jacob Mayers was crowned Champion Driver, Shamir Eversley won the Rookie Driver of the Year award and Oliver Judd was Most Improved Driver.

Mayers, who won the 100cc Easykart class, ended the season with a total of 601 points, 11 ahead of 2022 Champion Driver Calem Maloney, who won the 125cc Easykart class for the third consecutive year. Last year’s 60cc Easykart Champion Zak Mayers finished third overall and second in 100cc behind cousin Jacob.

Some of the evening’s loudest cheers were reserved for Eversley, who marked his eighth birthday just two weeks ago. He collected two further trophies, as winner of the 60cc Easykart Cadets class and for finishing sixth overall in the standings in his first season at the wheel. Most Improved Driver Judd started the season in the 60cc class, moving up to 100cc after two rounds.

Before trophies were presented to the top three in each class and down to 10th place in the overall standings, volunteer marshals and officials received tokens of appreciation from BKA Chairman Barry Mayers and Vice-Chairman Norman Catwell.

In a brief address Mayers said: “We saw great racecraft from more than 25 drivers who raced during the year. Special congratulations to all of tonight’s prize-winners. It was a challenging year for the BKA with many highs and quite a few lows. We had our very first marshal and official fun day, which was a huge success.

“A special thank-you to all of our marshals and officials; without you it would not be possible. Finally, some words of thanks to our championship sponsor Sectus Technologies and raceday sponsors Crane & Equipment, Glassesco, Williams Equipment and UpBeat Wholesale.”

The BKA’s new season starts on Sunday, March 23, at Bushy Park.
