BMF, Bushy Park applaud BRDC Rising Star Zane Maloney

Barbados Motoring Federation (BMF) President Andrew Mallalieu has added his voice to those of local sponsors Bushy Park Barbados, Rock Hard Cement and Sol in applauding 15-year-old Zane Maloney on his induction into the British Racing Drivers’ Club’s (BRDC) Rising Stars scheme. Founded in 1928, the BRDC is one of the world’s most exclusive motor racing clubs, home to the most successful racing drivers from Great Britain and the Commonwealth, with membership a highly sought-after accolade.

Aged 24 and under, the BRDC Rising Stars are, in essence, ‘Junior Members’ of the BRDC, all taking their motor racing very seriously and aiming for a professional career within the sport, the household names of the future. Following his interview at the Club’s HQ at Silverstone – home of the British Grand Prix – Maloney will now carry the famous blue roundel and be a part of a scheme designed to assist in the development of the next generation of motor sport stars.

Maloney said: “I’m honoured to be the first driver from the Caribbean to be welcomed into the BRDC’s prestigious Rising Stars scheme. Representing both the Club and Barbados in British F4 means a great deal to me – the British racing community has been incredibly supportive this season, as have all of my amazing fans back at home. I hope to make everyone proud as I continue my journey in motor sport.”

Having seen Zane in action last month at Britain’s fastest race-track, Thruxton, BMF President Mallalieu commented: “Zane was clearly the fastest driver. I was amazed by the comments from the officials, teams and sponsors who recognise him as a significant talent. Then I was very pleased to learn just this week that he is eligible to represent Barbados at the inaugural FIA World Motorsport Games in Italy in November. As the leader of the F4 British Championship, he will be considered one of the front runners and could bring the Gold Medal home for Barbados. The BMF will be very proud to confirm his entry, providing that financial support can be found.”

Bushy Park Barbados Operations Manager Amy Willis, who travelled to support Zane at Snetterton in August, added: “Speaking for all Zane’s island sponsors, we are so proud of what he is achieving in the F4 British Championship and now for being selected to become a BRDC Rising Star. He continues to show the world what an incredible driver he is on track and what an admirable person he is off track. It is a real honour to sponsor Zane and to be a part of his journey; we cannot wait to see what the future holds for him.”

After thrilling his local crowds at the recent Williams Industries International Race Meet, where he claimed a hat-trick of victories in the Radical Caribbean SR3 Cup – his first car races on home soil - former Barbados Karting Association (BKA) Champion Maloney heads to Knockhill in Scotland this coming weekend (September 14/15). He currently leads the British F4 standings by 37 points after seven race victories and a further three podiums in the Ford EcoBoost-powered series in 2019.
