Unique chance for karters to race against Zane Maloney
The chance to race against ABB Formula E World Championship driver Zane Maloney and experience sitting with him for some fast laps around Bushy Park are among the prizes on offer in a new karting competition at the St Philip facility, where 'The Boy from Barbados' took his first steps on the motor racing ladder.
With a prize fund valued at nearly $3,500 sponsored by Sign Station and STON Atelier, the competition is open to anyone who books a Karting Experience over the next seven weeks. The Final Race Day will be Saturday, April 26, just before Maloney heads off to the double-header Monaco E-Prix, midway through the Formula E season.
A Barbados Karting Association (BKA) Champion Driver by the age of 10, Maloney progressed through karting in the United States and Europe before winning the British Formula 4 Championship in 2019. Runner-up in the FIA F3 Championship and FIA Rookie of the Year in 2022, he finished fourth in last year’s FIA F2 Championship before being signed by the new Lola Yamaha ABT team for his Formula E debut.
Maloney is keen to share his experience with the winners: “It’s an epic competition and I’m looking forward to being involved. I learned my trade with the BKA at Bushy Park and there is no better way to start in motor sport. The Karting Experience gives everyone a chance to have a go, so let’s see if anyone has what it takes to beat me. I think it will be cool giving the winners some fast laps in a Radical.”
There are two age groups, Group 1 for 12 to 17 years old, Group 2 for 18 years old and above. All participants need to do is to enter their name and fastest lap time at the Bushy Park Driving Experiences office – the last day to sign up will be Friday, April 25 – and only those who reach the finals will be required to pay the $100 entry fee.
The top 30 drivers from each group will proceed to the Elimination Round, Head-To-Head Races and the Final Showdown against Maloney on April 26, with prizes for the top three in each age group. In Group 1, the winning driver aged from 12 to 17 will collect a cash prize of $500 and enjoy four laps of the 2.01-kilometre circuit in a Radical driven by Maloney; second place will win $250 and two laps, while third place earns $150 and a $100 voucher for a Grand Prix Karting Experience.
In Group 2, the winning driver aged 18 or over will collect a cash prize of $1000 and enjoy four laps in a Radical driven by Maloney; second place will win $500 and two laps, while third place earns $250 and a $100 voucher for a Grand Prix Karting Experience.
